Tears a Turnoff?

Posted on: January 11th, 2011 by wmapother 5 Comments

Here’s a bit of randomness for you:  According to this New York Times piece here, researchers investigating the evolutionary purpose of tears discovered that women’s tears can be a sexual turnoff for some men.

The mind reels with possible directions in which to take this post.  I mean, how many more ways can we men fail to understand what you women aren’t saying?

Interview with ‘AE’ director

Posted on: January 11th, 2011 by wmapother 3 Comments

In anticipation of the appearance of ‘Another Earth’ in competition at next week’s Sundance film festival, IndieWire has posted an interview here with herr director himself, Mike Cahill (he, to the right, of the long hair).

By the way, I have never, ever seen his expression as calm as in this picture.  He’s typically bouncing about, excited to try some new idea.  I smell Photoshop..

Hold onto your body parts..

Huffington Post has released a list here of about twenty things that done gone obsolete in the last decade.  Some of those things to which you can wave bye-bye:
     • VHS Tapes (well, yeah, of course)
     • Bookstores (mostly true)
     • Forgetting (they did not check in with me before publishing this list)
     • Hand-written letters (saddest item on the list)

There are about fifteen more.  I’d forgotten (see?) how many I no longer use.

Another list from a non-HuffPoer is here.  It’s has the far grabbier title, Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never Know.

A Vote for Independence

Posted on: January 7th, 2011 by wmapother 4 Comments

This Sunday, January 9, the people of Southern Sudan will begin voting in an historic referendum on whether to create their own nation.  For two decades, they fought a civil war with northern Sudan, and it has ravaged the county.

In 2009 I narrated ‘The New Sudan,’ a documentary which introduced, to most of us, the abundance of both horror and optimism in post-civil war southern Sudan.  The filmmakers have posted an interview with me here.

For perspective, Sudan is 1/4 the size of the United States.  Some overview information on Sudan is in Wikipedia, the New York Times, and CNN.

If you’re able to donate to the southern Sudanese, there are numerous ways to do so, including some mentioned in the interview and through various non-govermental organizations.

Two funny shorts to start the year

Posted on: January 4th, 2011 by wmapother 5 Comments

Okay, many of you may have seen these, as they made the rounds last fall, but someone recently reminded me of them, so I re-watched and still found them worth wasting time on (I mean, come on, there’s just sooo much time left in 2011…).

‘So you want to go to law school’ (here) is both painfully funny and accurate, at least according to lawyers, or those of us who know scores and scores of them.

‘The client/agent relationship’ (here) is both painfully funny and accurate, at least according to actors, or those of us who have cast our sad lot among them.  [Note:  I excuse my agents and managers from any criticism, assumptions, or collateral abuse which can be in any way derived, presumed, guessed at, or otherwise  irresponsibly fabricated from the previous sentence.  (So, call me, guys, okay?  Seriously.) ]

Finally, the first one above is on YouTube, and the page include a number of links to similar videos, which you can watch to your heart’s content.  (It’s only Jan 3…..)
