Advice to Young Actors

Posted on: February 9th, 2010 by wmapother No Comments

Young actors often ask my advice about lots of subjects — fashion, cooking, gardening, geopolitical meta-awareness. Except for the last one, I’m generally not much help. However, I do usually have a word or two of advice on how to survive the actor’s life. Here’s my answer on the subject from my recent interview in the LA Examiner:

First, learn how to manage yourself — mentally, emotionally, financially, physically. Socialize to make contacts and keep in touch with them. Take the craft seriously. Learn the history of Hollywood and watch classic films. Make the most of your downtime by developing interests, hobbies, and causes. Cultivate an alternate career / source of income. Make friends outside the entertainment industry.”

It’s not rocket science, but it does require a bit of discipline and faith.

Back from the Non-Dead, only to…

Posted on: February 1st, 2010 by wmapother 1 Comment

My, my, my. Five months just doesn’t take as long to slip by as it used to, does it? Well, no use blaming Mother Earth and Father Time for this one. Mea culpa, big time. My apologies for the absence — but those aliens just wouldn’t bring me back, no matter what I said. Okay, enough tomfoolery. Lost, er, Lots to catch up on.

So, after finishing the Shakespeare Lab in NYC, I narrated The New Sudan, a documentary on Southern Sudan’s work at rebuilding after the twenty-year civil war. It will soon begin the circuit of film festivals. The trailer is here.
Then I shot an indie film, Another Earth, in the gorgeous Catskills of New York state. It’s a romantic drama/sci-fi. That will also soon be making the festival rounds.
November found me in Vancouver, another beautiful location. (It’s a tough job, I know..). This time I was shooting an episode (called ‘Sanctuary’) of Fox’s new show Human Target, which airs THIS Wed, Feb 3, at 8pm. (Gold stars to those who guessed that might have something to do with my finally returning to my blog..) If you miss the airing, you can see it on Hulu by clicking here.
Then, in December, I was back in NYC to shoot an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent. (which should air in March/April). NYC in December with the holidays lights and the smiling shoppers…Autumn been berry berry good to me.
That’s enough for the first post in five months. I didn’t stretch properly, and I don’t want an injury after so long away. More to come soon!

HURT DVD RELEASE ANNOUNCED

Posted on: July 10th, 2009 by wmapother 4 Comments

Word has just come to me from on high (i.e., from the director fabulosa, Barbara Stepansky) that Hurt will be out on DVD November 17. Check out all my fabulous co-stars on the imdb page, here. Also, the film got a brief write-up on a site devoted to women in horror (god bless the Internet) here.

P.S. No word yet on release or distribution for A Warrior’s Heart. We just finished shooting in late January. These things can take a while..

Just Under the Wire

Posted on: May 14th, 2009 by wmapother 2 Comments

Just in time before it goes off the air, I’ll be on Prison Break this Friday at 8/7C on Fox as FBI agent Chris Franco (in a double ep — ‘Rate of Exchange’ and ‘Killing Your Number’).  I’m sorry the show’s leaving.  It has a cult of devout fans, and as mentioned in an earlier post, I know one of the leads, Dominic Purcell, from Mission:Impossible II.  Here’s hoping that it goes out with a bang.

[Note: If you missed the broadcast, you can watch it online here.]
One other thing:  Not that anyone’s actually voiced this, but just in case there’s any suspicions:  I was cast and shot before — that’s prior to, earlier than, somewhere between eons ago and the eve of — the show was cancelled.  So I’m innocent, in the clear, off the hook.
[One other other thing:  I was also in the last two episodes of Touched By An Angel.  I cannot swear I had nothing to do with that one.]
