Sundance Report – Le Fin

Posted on: January 30th, 2011 by wmapother 6 Comments

What a difference a week makes.  Brit Marling and Mike Cahill have rocketed off in the indie film world, and Another Earth has been shown nothing but love up at Sundance.

We premiered on Monday in a 1200-seat theatre to a standing ovation (very rare at Sundance, I’m told), and to the right is my (blurry) view from stage during the post-Q&A.

Then within the next few days, Fox Searchlight bought the film and will release it theatrically both in the U.S. and internationally.  To the right is the poster that was used at the fest…

Finally, last night at the awards ceremony, Another Earth was given both the Sloan Prize for Science and a Special Jury Prize for Drama.

And all from such humble beginnings…

Many great reviews are all over the web, so I’ll just include one, from the NYT, here.

Finally, one of my final memories:  snow and a (relatively) early hour produce the unusual sight of somewhat empty streets at this year’s festival..

Sundance Report – First 28 Hrs

Posted on: January 23rd, 2011 by wmapother 8 Comments

Bottom line:  Busy, tiring, fun.  Stop.  Stayed out too late last night.  Curse my Slated partners this morning.  Stop.  Sidewalks very busy, esp. with snow and some heavy snowage today.  Serious about not parking (see sign at right).  Stop.
Interviews and photo shoots apparently not disasters.  We’ll see.  Stop.  Another Earth generating lots of interest for its intriguing premise.  Stop.  Pianist playing on sidewalk for passersby and bear (bear right).  Stop.  Accidental, first-time meeting with fellow actor from Louisville Jess Weixler (Teeth).  Stop.  Such is the fun of Sundance.

Biggest Show Pix

Posted on: December 10th, 2010 by wmapother 6 Comments
As I expected (here), last week’s Biggest Show for the Young Storytellers Foundation was a blast.  If you’re anywhere in the LA region (or ‘the southland,’ as no one but the local media call it), definitely participate or at least attend a show.  And whether you’re here or on the moon, it’s certainly worth donating to, which can be done here.

After some opening remarks and awards to volunteers who have performed in dozens of shows, the ten or so actors (just enough for a respectably drama-filled reality show) lined up.  It felt just like a cattle call.  Except the buyers were eleven-year-old playwrights.

Then one by one, each actor went to the front of the stage and pitched herself or himself to be cast in their plays.  Some actors danced, some did voices, and some, like me, just sat and said, basically, ‘Cast me, please, you eleven-year-olds.’  And they did.

Denver, parte trois

Posted on: December 6th, 2010 by wmapother 5 Comments

So this is the third and final section of photos I’ll subject you to.  On my last day in Denver I visited the Botanic Gardens.  They were beautiful, especially given that it was early winter and most things weren’t, well, in full bloom.

It was late dusk, and I caught these trees (they could be Poplars or Palms, for all I know) illuminated by last few moments of daylight..

Until January 31, the Gardens are offering a special exhibit of some works of English sculptor Henry Moore.
In this photo to the right, the piece is the upper right is the same as the piece in the photo above..

If the sculptures mystify you, try this.  The men’s restroom two urinals are placed against their far walls.  Now ladies, men are not necessarily crazy about standing next to one another while they’re peeing, but this arrangement is perhaps a bit too coddling…as it were.

More photos, you say?

Posted on: December 1st, 2010 by wmapother 4 Comments

Well, you can’t say you weren’t warned.

Blogger is not particularly photo-formatting-friendly, so I’m-a just fittin’ in the captions the best I know how.  I expect to move this blog to a more genial host in the next few weeks..

This is the stage at the stunning Red Rocks amphitheatre, where apparently everyone, except me, has either seen a show or performed.

On Denver’s 16th Street Mall, which was deserted and un-mall-like on Sunday, anyone can sit and knock out a tune on the piano.  Unless, of course, you can’t play a lick.  Like me.

I have no idea what constructive comment I could possibly make about this photo, also from the Mall.  Except that if this poor, blue, mortified bull came to life, I hope he’d get in a couple good shots at the sadist who painted him.

Finally, from the good folks at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave comes a pleasant tale about Bill & Teddy’s excellent adventure, shoved right in one’s face, as it were, lest museum visitors become bored while standing at the latrine.

Bonus point: The Museum is in Golden, Colorado.
