Oh, Sault Ste Marie!

Posted on: February 27th, 2011 by wmapother 7 Comments

So I’m shooting here in chilly Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, just a quick swim across the border from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  The movie is Citizen Gangster, about the infamous Canadian bank robber and prison escaper, who operated from about 1949-52.

Scott Speedman (Felicity, Underworld, etc.) is playing Edwin, and Kevin Durand (Martin Keamy of Lost, etc.) is playing one of his gang members.  My role is Detective Rhys, who arrests Eddie and then pursues the gang after their escape.

I’ve had little time to explore the area, but it’s beautiful (the pic is from my hotel window), and the people are preternaturally friendly — as one expects from Canadians..

Sundance Report – Le Fin

Posted on: January 30th, 2011 by wmapother 6 Comments

What a difference a week makes.  Brit Marling and Mike Cahill have rocketed off in the indie film world, and Another Earth has been shown nothing but love up at Sundance.

We premiered on Monday in a 1200-seat theatre to a standing ovation (very rare at Sundance, I’m told), and to the right is my (blurry) view from stage during the post-Q&A.

Then within the next few days, Fox Searchlight bought the film and will release it theatrically both in the U.S. and internationally.  To the right is the poster that was used at the fest…

Finally, last night at the awards ceremony, Another Earth was given both the Sloan Prize for Science and a Special Jury Prize for Drama.

And all from such humble beginnings…

Many great reviews are all over the web, so I’ll just include one, from the NYT, here.

Finally, one of my final memories:  snow and a (relatively) early hour produce the unusual sight of somewhat empty streets at this year’s festival..

Sundance Report – First 28 Hrs

Posted on: January 23rd, 2011 by wmapother 8 Comments

Bottom line:  Busy, tiring, fun.  Stop.  Stayed out too late last night.  Curse my Slated partners this morning.  Stop.  Sidewalks very busy, esp. with snow and some heavy snowage today.  Serious about not parking (see sign at right).  Stop.
Interviews and photo shoots apparently not disasters.  We’ll see.  Stop.  Another Earth generating lots of interest for its intriguing premise.  Stop.  Pianist playing on sidewalk for passersby and bear (bear right).  Stop.  Accidental, first-time meeting with fellow actor from Louisville Jess Weixler (Teeth).  Stop.  Such is the fun of Sundance.

Denver, parte trois

Posted on: December 6th, 2010 by wmapother 5 Comments

So this is the third and final section of photos I’ll subject you to.  On my last day in Denver I visited the Botanic Gardens.  They were beautiful, especially given that it was early winter and most things weren’t, well, in full bloom.

It was late dusk, and I caught these trees (they could be Poplars or Palms, for all I know) illuminated by last few moments of daylight..

Until January 31, the Gardens are offering a special exhibit of some works of English sculptor Henry Moore.
In this photo to the right, the piece is the upper right is the same as the piece in the photo above..

If the sculptures mystify you, try this.  The men’s restroom two urinals are placed against their far walls.  Now ladies, men are not necessarily crazy about standing next to one another while they’re peeing, but this arrangement is perhaps a bit too coddling…as it were.

Tardy Thanks

Posted on: November 30th, 2010 by wmapother 4 Comments
Okay, so I’m a few days late on Thanksgiving.  But I have a good reason:  I was in Denver with my family, and all over Colorado the internets were down…  Okay, moving on.
One of the many great things about gratitude is that it never goes out of style.  Who ever heard of gratitude being unwelcome, right?  So here, a few days late, are just a few photos of why I was feeling so grateful last Thursday.  (I took a lot of photos, and I’ll probably fill the next couple posts with them.  Be patient, gentle reader.)
These two (untouched) were taken on a cameraphone from the north side of the plane’s aisle.  Fortunately, I had the window seat, or someone’s holidays would’ve started somewhat unpleasantly..
Suggested accompaniment (with apologies):  Rhapsody in Blue.
