Film News Briefs <3 Slated

Posted on: February 15th, 2012 by wmapother No Comments

There’s a great piece on my online film finance marketplace Slated in Film News Briefs.

We had a terrific party at Sundance, and the marketplace currently lists over 30 films, including several with Oscar winners.  Here’s to the democratization of film finance!

Two Pces o’ News

Drew Peterson: Untouchable, on Lifetime this past Saturday, was the  most-watched cable movie for the past two years.  There were 5.8 million people who were kept off the street and prevented from thieving and pillaging.  Score one for Lifetime!

But some dare question the film’s accuracy.  We are shocked.  Shocked!

On a totally separate note:  Pandodaily, a site with all sorts of tech news, picked up Slated’s announcement at the launch party at Sundance.  (See my Slated FAQ on this site for more info about Slated).

Launch Broken…But Not Too Broken

Posted on: August 17th, 2011 by wmapother 2 Comments

I love that advice.  In other words, just get the darn thing out the door.  And this site is just that darn thing.

Welcome to the new WilliamMapother.com.

It isn’t perfect or complete, and some may call it barely serviceable, but at least it’s out the door.  I intend to take a page from the playbooks of the best tech companies and iterate frequently, instead of tweaking endlessly toward some vague notion of perfection.

So — plenty of more content will be uploaded in the coming days, weeks and months, and if there’s anything you’d like to see, please let me know (on the About page).

In the meantime, I’m glad to have you here.

ProducedBy Panel Piece P.R.

Posted on: June 6th, 2011 by wmapother 3 Comments

Yday’s panel at the Produced By Conference was, I hope, as informative for the filmmakers as it was fun for the participants.  The focus was on adding actors to independent films, but the conversation included lots of things, and I spoke a bit about Slated soon to be in beta on its online marketplace for film finance.  Judging by the reaction of filmmakers afterwards, finding a new potential source of capital for their films isn’t exactly the worst idea they’ve ever heard..

One tip for indie producers seeking talent (the industry’s kind term for actors) for their low-budget films:  Consider offering the actors the types of roles they generally don’t get a chance to play.  Just a thought.

The Hollywood Reporter piece on it is here.

Sundance Report – First 28 Hrs

Posted on: January 23rd, 2011 by wmapother 8 Comments

Bottom line:  Busy, tiring, fun.  Stop.  Stayed out too late last night.  Curse my Slated partners this morning.  Stop.  Sidewalks very busy, esp. with snow and some heavy snowage today.  Serious about not parking (see sign at right).  Stop.
Interviews and photo shoots apparently not disasters.  We’ll see.  Stop.  Another Earth generating lots of interest for its intriguing premise.  Stop.  Pianist playing on sidewalk for passersby and bear (bear right).  Stop.  Accidental, first-time meeting with fellow actor from Louisville Jess Weixler (Teeth).  Stop.  Such is the fun of Sundance.
