On The Rox

Posted on: March 27th, 2010 by wmapother 2 Comments

Did something last night that, every time I do it, I wonder why I don’t do it more often.  No, not that.  I caught some live music.  Yes, I know I wrote about Randy Newman just a few weeks ago, but before that it had been far too long.

And last night’s show couldn’t have been more different than the Man’s show.  It was upstairs at the legendary Roxy on Sunset in an after-hours room called On the Rox, offering a nice view of LA if you aren’t inclined to watch the band.

My last post on music rambled.  Live and learn.  So, to cut to it, three recs to check out:

1)  Jill Hennessy of ‘Crossing Jordan’ fame played a terrific acoustic set.    Info on her here and here.

2)  Concepto Tambor then jerked everyone out of their reveries with some rocking Latin drum and bass.  They’re on myspace here.

3)  Finally, Micah Green et al closed out with some riveting indie rock/folk.  He’s here and here.

Newmania

Note:  This represents something new for me and ATW:  non-work-related posts.  I’ve been postponing such a thing for some time now, and I’m still ambivalent about doing it and incredulous that anyone will have made it to the end of the second sentence.  (Of course, I never thought anyone would read my posts which are, in fact, work-related, but unless the metrics are off or my mom is refreshing like a coke fiend –which she is NOT, I assure you — a number of you have far too much time on your hands.  I know you have choices when you blow your time on Earth, so thank you for blowing it with me.)

Okay, so you’ve been warned.

Last Friday night I had the too-rare privilege of attending a performance by one of my absolute favorites, the singer-songwriter Randy Newman.  I’ve been an unabashed fan of his for a long, long time, since an ex-gf introduced me to his song “Guilty.”  (Relevance pointedly skipped here.)  The man’s been nominated for thirteen Grammies and nineteen Oscars (including two this year).  His website’s here.

Amidst my many reactions during his show was a marvelling at those crafts/art forms — eg, singing, dancing, acting — which produce no tangible product, versus those which do — eg, writing, sculpture, painting, and film.  I’m sure some academic/critic somewhere has coined terms to distinguish them, and I’m even more sure that as a former English major I should know them.  But I don’t.

The point is, it occurred to me while listening to Randy — yes, Randy, I met him once — that the two seem to produce quite different effects upon me.  I can’t find words right now to distinguish between the effects, but the former group tends to invoke a poignancy that the latter does not.  The fact that the first group is performed contributes to that poignancy, but at first blush I suspect it’s more due to their evanescence.  Every moment of experiencing those forms live, not recorded, contains both the death of the moment prior and the birth of the moment coming, coupled with the awareness that the moments cannot be recovered.  Sorrow and joy bound together, moment after moment after moment.

But maybe that’s just me.

I warned you.

One last note:  Randy usually sings in troubador style, that is, he sings in the first-person voice of a character.

Okay, off you go to discover:  I suggest trying songs from Sail Away, Good Old Boys, or Trouble in Paradise.  Or any of the animated movies he’s contributed to.  Or any of his albums.

On lala.com the great man is here.  On iTunes he’s here.

That’s all for now.  Whew.

note to self:  shorter posts.  people only have 75 years to blow.

Oh, the (in)Humanity!

Posted on: February 14th, 2010 by wmapother 2 Comments

So, in Honor/Horror of Valentine’s Day, I decided to share with you a few of my own observations and conclusions about dating, romance, and l-o-v-e.

Then, later, I realized that none of you has (yet) done anything to me to deserve receiving such dangerous and potentially pernicious information.  Therefore, the kinder, gentler, soberer me has decided to do something more humane:  Share instead a few interesting articles on this Topic A.

The first few have to do with why you/we/I/us/them have such trouble with the damn subject.
The next two have to do with what to do about it/them/us.

The NYT’s John Tierney’s very funny Flaw-O-Matic is here.
12 years later, Tierney’s corollary to the Flaw-O-Matic is here.
Tierney discuss studies in re. Flaw-O-Matics here.

Lori Gottlieb’s new book on settling is discussed here.
Gottlieb’s controversial Atlantic article on the subject is here.

May you all find happiness and love.  Happy Valentining!

First Flyover Film Festival

Posted on: May 31st, 2009 by wmapother 3 Comments

I’m very happy to announce that on June 12-14, Louisville will host its first-ever Flyover Film Festival, founded by several fabulous people (Sheila Berman, Ryan Daly, Gill Holland, Tracy Heightchew, Stu Pollard, George Parker) and myself.

For this inaugural festival we’ve focused mostly on films which include participation from a present or past Louisvillian.  Those connections are here, and the schedule is here.  Of course, I suggested (humbly, mind you!) one of my own films, and lo and behold, the festival will be showing ‘The Burrowers.’  Fortunate attendees will be able to see Phil Parmet’s terrific cinematography (and the awesomely gooey-mouthed creatures) on a wide screen, as well as lob some questions (easy one) to me and (difficult ones) to the nimble director, JT Petty, in a Q & A afterwards.
The festival offers a few other feature films, including one with William H. Macy, some powerful documentaries, and several wonderful short films.  A filmmaker’s reception, an afterparty at Gill’s Green Building, and an awards ceremony round out the festivities.  All screenings take place at downtown’s Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts.
See y’all there!

SXSW

Posted on: March 25th, 2009 by wmapother No Comments

Just returned from another raucous trip to Austin’s South by Southwest Festival. Two friends won the Special Jury Prize with the premiere of their documentary, The Way We Get By; I was able to watch a rehearsal of the theatre troupe Rude Mechs‘s upcoming show; and, not least in any way, shape, or form, I saw the Waco Brothers perform two terrific shows. If you haven’t treated yourself, listen to a few pieces of their rockin’ alt country here on iTunes. Go ahead, I’ll wait.. Really, I will. Go on. (Back in just a sec.) Right? See what I mean? If you have them on and aren’t moving, check yourself for a pulse. They’re all over my workout playlist, which is why I blame them for my reputation at the gym for being a spaz.
